White Plume Makes ICD-10 Easy for Physicians
Date:7/14/2015

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., July 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- For over 30 years the preferred tool used by nearly all physicians to communicate what occurred in an office visit was the paper superbill.  It was universally adopted by physicians across the US.  There were no mandates, no government incentives, no threatened penalties, no consultants or complex searches for best practices.

The reason why the paper superbill was universally adopted by physicians was because it was a tool that was fast, easy and surprisingly accurate in delivering the information necessary for coders or billers to file a claim that would result in appropriate reimbursement.  The physician could quickly circle the appropriate charges and supporting diagnosis codes without taking their focus away from the patient encounter.

Now, the federally mandated transition to ICD-10 on 10/1/2015 threatens to make the paper superbill obsolete, putting physician productivity and cash flow at risk.

Over 50% of physicians are using a paper superbill

White Plume conducted a telephone survey of 730 practices in October 2014, 56.16% of practices reported that their physicians were still using a paper superbill.  Despite the accelerated adoption of EHR since 2009, the majority of physicians continue to use a paper superbill, largely because of the productivity it delivers.

The Paper Superbill will not work in ICD-10

The increased granularity in the new code set will require physician practices to use a broader range of codes. Over the past four years, White Plume has done ICD-10 Conversion Analyses for over 2,000 superbills.  The average superbill has 200-300 ICD-9 codes, which convert to 800 - 6,000 ICD-10 codes.  These codes cannot fit on a single page superbill, which means that physician practices will either have to find a new solution or expand their superbill to be 3-8 pages long.

An Electronic Superbill for ICD-10

AccelaCAPTURE is an electronic superbill that is custom designed to look exactly like a practice's paper superbill.  The electronic superbill uses a patent pending process to convert the ICD-9 code into the corresponding ICD-10 codes, for the end user to select with 1-2 extra clicks.

White Plume works with over 6.000 physicians across the United States to help prepare their practices for ICD-10.  This solution preserves physician productivity and makes ICD-10 a non-event for the physician while ensuring that the billing team has all of the necessary data to submit ICD-10 claims correctly the first time.
