In cancer treatment, proton therapy uses charged particles to deliver targeted radiation to tumor cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue and reducing harmful side effects.  "This cutting edge technology will allow us to better serve our patients while providing the same high touch and high care standards that set the Bruno Cancer Center apart from others in the community," states Dr. Susan Salter, Radiation Oncologist.

Providence Proton has also chosen as one of its partners IBA, a global medical technology company focused on bringing integrated and innovative solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. IBA is the worldwide technology leader in the field of proton therapy, considered to be the most advanced form of radiation therapy available today.

IBA is the first proton therapy equipment company to have achieved proton therapy regulatory clearance by the FDA in the United States, CE marking in Europe, GOST clearance in Russia, SHONIN in Japan, as well as KFDA clearance in Korea. Committed to proton therapy for over 30 years. Today over 50,000 patients have been treated using IBA Proteus® proton therapy systems.

Providence Proton and St. Vincent's will deploy the Proteus®ONE which is IBA's compact single room proton therapy solution.

The Providence and St. Vincent's Proton Center will be located on the campus of St. Vincent's - Birmingham. The Proton Center development costs are expected to be in excess of $50,000,000 and a typical center takes two years to complete.  Ground-breaking is expected over the next 6 months and the center will open in 2019.

"Through Providence Proton, we are providing development leadership and bringing the needed capital for the construction and operation of new proton centers in the United States. We believe our development of Proton Centers will not only bring state-of-the-art Cancer treatment facilities to many communities within various regions, but will make a difference in people's lives," says Curtis James, Providence Proton's Chief Executive Officer.
