(Hologic o la società) (NASDAQ: HOLX), leader nello sviluppo, nella produzione e nella fornitura di sistemi diagnostici e medici di acquisizione delle immagini e di prodotti chirurgici di alta qualità dedicati al servizio delle esigenze di salute delle donne, ha annunciato il 9 gennaio 2013 che un nuovo studio rivoluzionario, pubblicato su Radiology, la rivista scientifica della Radiological Society of North America, ha riscontrato che l'aggiunta all'esame 2D di screening al seno della tecnologia a tre dimensioni (3D) per la mammografia (tomosintesi al seno) di screening  aumenta in maniera significativa la rilevazione del cancro e riduce il numero di falsi positivi.

Lo studio, "Comparison of Digital Mammography Alone and Digital Mammography plus Tomosynthesis in a Population-based Screening Program" (Confronto della sola mammografia digitale con la mammografia digitale abbinata alla tomosintesi in un programma di screening sulla popolazione), è stato condotto da Per Skaane, M.D., Ph.D. dell'Ospedale Universitario Ullevaal di Oslo. Lo studio è stato basato su 12.631 esami di screening in un grande ospedale norvegese.

I ricercatori hanno riscontrato, mediante la tecnologia Hologic della mammografia 3D di in combinazione con una mammografia 2D, un notevole aumento nei tassi di rilevazione del cancro e una contemporanea diminuzione di falsi positivi rispetto alla sola mammografia 2D. Risultati importanti includono:

  • Un aumento del 40% nella rilevazione di cancri al seno invasivi
  • Un aumento del 27% nella rilevazione di tutti i cancri (invasivi e in situ)
  • Una riduzione del 15% nei falsi positivi
