These new requirements stipulate that all UDI (Unique Device Identification) must be dark marked directly onto the metal with a YAG laser machine or diode pump, without using chemicals. (Those not complying to these new standards are considered non-FDA approved).

Although stainless steel has been used for some time for medical device manufacture such as in Medical Alert Jewelry due to its excellent resistance to corrosion, the markings are most often not as durable.
