American Psychiatric Nurses Association Announces 2019 Elections Results

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is pleased to announce the newest members of the APNA Board of Directors and 2020 Nominating Committee. Elected by psychiatric-mental health nurse members from across the country, these six individuals will begin their terms at the APNA 33rd Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA, October 2-5, 2019.

“These new members of the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee bring unique perspectives and talents that will enrich our organization,” says APNA President Gail R. Stern, RN, MSN, PMHCNS-BC. “Their dedication to our profession will help APNA fulfill its core purpose to be the unifying voice for psychiatric-mental health nursing. The inclusivity and passion for APNA’s continued growth, demonstrated by the nominees and our membership’s votes, strengthen us for the future.”

Incoming President-Elect Matthew Tierney, MS, CNS, ANP, PMHNP, FAAN is an Associate Clinical Faculty and Clinical Director of Substance Use Treatment and Education in San Francisco, California. His service with APNA has included the following roles: Inaugural Chair of the Addictions Council from 2013 to 2018; 2019 task force to update the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Scope and Standards; faculty and author of the substance use content for the APNA Transitions in Practice program; faculty and content development for the webinar series "Effective Treatment for Opioid Use Disorders"; member of the Scholarly Review Committee for the APNA Annual Conference; peer reviewer for the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association; member of the Nominating Committee in 2011; and LACE Implementation Task Force member in 2010-2011. He received the APNA California Chapter Ann Wilkinson Nurse Psychotherapist Award in 2013. He has also served as a representative of APNA to various stakeholder groups and is involved at the community and national level with several outside organizations. He has current research supported by government and nursing organization funding.    

“PMH nursing has more opportunities than ever before to promote the health and wellness of all US citizens,” says Tierney. “We can and must take advantage of ongoing federal initiatives to increase access to behavioral health care, and also take advantage of local and national efforts to acknowledge and employ the strengths and skills of PMH nurses. I value the opportunity to help advance our profession and our nation’s health as APNA President-Elect.”

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is a national professional membership organization committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders. APNA’s membership is inclusive of all psychiatric-mental health registered nurses including associate degree, baccalaureate, advanced practice (comprised of clinical nurse specialists and psychiatric nurse practitioners), and nurse scientists and academicians (PhD). APNA serves as a resource for psychiatric-mental health nurses to engage in networking, education, and the dissemination of research.

The American Psychiatric Nurses Association is accredited with distinction as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
