American Medical ID and American Association of Nurse Practitioners Collaborate to Encourage Proactive Health Management
Date:3/24/2015

HOUSTON, March 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- American Medical ID and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) announced a partnership that supports the visions of both organizations. For American Medical ID, that means an emergency ID on every person who needs one, and for AANP, patients with access to quality health care through the providers of their choice.

Both visions require education about tools like medical ID jewelry and personal health records that people can use to make more informed decisions about their own health. Medical IDs are a critical part of managing chronic conditions like diabetes, heart conditions, or food or drug allergies. Engraved with the wearer's name, emergency contact, and medical information, IDs provide valuable insight to emergency responders and allow for accurate treatment. However, many patients who could benefit from an ID may not know they need one, or how to go about getting one. Nurse practitioners who work one-on-one with patients can help fill in that knowledge gap and provide the necessary information.

"Nurse practitioners play a valuable role in educating their patients about the importance of wearing a medical ID when needed," said Rick Russell, president and CEO of American Medical ID. "One of our commitments as a company is to inform the public about what medical IDs are and who they help. With more than 57,000 members providing one-on-one care to patients, AANP members reinforce the idea that medical IDs are a critical life-saving tool."

In addition to medical IDs, American Medical ID offers another tool that helps people take charge of their own health. MyIHR is an online personal health record to help people keep track of all of their health and medical-related information. The secure online portal stores a variety of health information in one easily-accessible location. It can also work in tandem with medical IDs with an engraved username and PIN that allow first responders and other healthcare professionals to view the records.

"In addition to their clinical expertise, NPs spend time with their patients, encouraging them to make better lifestyle and health care decisions," said Ken Miller, PhD, RN, CFNP, FAAN, FAANP, president of AANP. "We believe medical ID jewelry and personal health records are essential tools that enable providers to understand chronic and acute conditions of the individual, thus providing the patient with the most appropriate care and treatment."

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is the largest professional membership organization for nurse practitioners (NPs) of all specialties. It represents the interests of over 205,000 NPs, including more than 57,000 individual members and 200 organizations, providing a unified networking platform and advocating for their role as providers of high-quality, cost-effective, comprehensive, patient-centered and personalized health care. The organization provides legislative leadership at the local, state and national levels, advancing health policy; promoting excellence in practice, education and research; and establishing standards that best serve NP patients and other health care consumers. For more information, visit aanp.org.
