Women Gain New Insights into Their Breast Implants with New High Resolution Ultrasound

A cohort of plastic surgeons across the United States is offering new, high resolution ultrasound (HRUS) technology to help their patients more easily detect ruptured silicone gel implants. Dr. Herluf Lund, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Chesterfield, MO, is participating in this study and reporting on his experience. While the FDA currently recommends regular MRI scans for women with silicone gel implants, compliance rates are low. Now that several studies have documented the excellent accuracy of in-office high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) scans for detecting silent rupture of silicone gel implants, surgeons are looking to this new technology to tell patients that their implants are intact or ruptured.

Dr. Lund’s interest in the study came in part because he wanted to find a better way to detect silent ruptures. “One of the great challenges with silicone gel implants is the ongoing monitoring of the state of the implant. There's no easy way to do it.” HRUS offers an easy and inexpensive way for women to know the status of their breast implants.

The national study is being conducted in nine facilities around the country in order to evaluate how women feel about having the new HRUS scans of their silicone gel breast implants. HRUS is being offered at no cost to the first 150 women in each facility who have silicone gel implants that were placed between 2000 and 2015. Women not eligible for the study, wishing to check for implant rupture, are offered the ultrasound option at a low cost.

Most women with silicone gel breast implants are aware that their implants may rupture without any symptoms, called a “silent rupture.” As Dr. Lund explains, “in the past the Food and Drug Administration had recommended use of MRI studies. Recommending them starting at three years and every two years thereafter. But MRI studies aren't easy. They're not practical. They're hard to do.” MRIs are expensive, and are usually not covered by health insurance plans. The latest HRUS technology allows women to know what is happening inside their body with their breast implants right in their surgeon’s office.

Patients enjoy the simplicity and quick turnaround HRUS offers. Dr. Lund explains, “it's really nice to have something that we can turn around and give to the patient, information, almost instant feedback saying, 'Yep, we think this implant's fine.' Or 'We think this implant needs a little bit more investigation.'”

Women in the Chesterfield area with silicone gel breast implants placed between 2000 and 2015 who are interested in ultrasound to verify whether or not their implants have silently ruptured may contact Dr. Lund’s office at (636) 223-5846 to schedule an in-office High Resolution Ultrasound scan.
