Dr. Philip Shindler, Westlake Village cosmetic dentist, now informs all individuals about the importance of prevention for their oral health. Many oral health problems, such as tooth decay or periodontal disease can be prevented.

The first and most obvious way to prevent oral health problems is with proper brushing and flossing. Everyone should brush twice per day and after consuming foods and beverages that contain sugar. Brushing removes harmful bacteria, the sugars that the bacteria use for fuel, and plaque from the surfaces of the teeth. In addition, flossing at least once per day can remove bacteria, food particles, and plaque from between the teeth. Use dental floss and a toothbrush that are approved by the American Dental Association and toothpaste that contains fluoride. Another important way to prevent oral health problems is to visit the dentist for regular checkups. Patients may need to have a regular exam and cleaning as often as every six months, depending on their age and general oral health condition.
