Waxman Sham Hearing Distorts Abstinence Education Benefits

WASHINGTON, April 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins released the following statement criticizing Congressman Henry Waxman's biased abstinence education hearing today before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

"Chairman Henry Waxman's hostility to abstinence education, heedless of studies showing positive outcomes, is exhibited by this biased hearing. Chairman Waxman invited seven witnesses who are ideologically opposed to abstinence education, and only two witnesses in favor of abstinence education programs.

"Chairman Waxman's well-known support for radical causes, such as abortion on demand and for so-called 'comprehensive' sex education, should not detract from the true benefits of abstinence education programs. Just yesterday, the Heritage Foundation published a paper showing that 11 of 15 abstinence education programs had positive results. Dr. Stan Weed, testifying today for the minority, has published several papers detailing positive results from abstinence education programs.

"Dr. Weed offers compelling scientific evaluation establishing an evidence base for abstinence education programs decreasing rates of sexual initiation in youth by 45 to 50 percent. He also identifies key features of successful programs, including depth of intervention, sufficient dosage, and attention to 'the teacher factor.'

"Despite the enormous amount of money going to 'comprehensive' sex-ed programs than abstinence education programs, recent CDC data show that an alarming 40 percent of sexually active teen girls are infected with an STD. It's tragic that elected officials promote sex-ed programs that condone high-risk sexual behavior when it is our youth who suffer the consequences. It's equally tragic that Chairman Waxman ignores evidence showing that sexual abstinence is the healthiest behavior for youth.
