There are several options for bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass, LAP-BAND® and sleeve gastrectomy. “I went over the options with Michelle and her husband, the pros and cons, and we decided together that laparoscopic gastric sleeve was going to be the best option for her for optimal results,” Dr. Hirai said.
During the sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon creates a small, tubular shaped stomach. This procedure is recommended for individuals with BMI over 40, or 35 and above if they also have obesity related comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. Michelle had her surgery on June 3rd, 2013. As of this report, she has already lost 67 lbs., bringing her down to 250 lbs. She is still losing weight every day.
