Retina Group of New York to Provide Diabetic Retinopathy Education at Tour de Cure and Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes Fundraiser

The Retina Group of New York (RGONY) is pleased to participate in the 2017 Greater New York BoardWALK Festival and Tour de Cure American Diabetes Association fundraiser on September 24. Nearly 2,000 attendees are anticipated to walk, run, and ride including 200 Red Striders/Runners and 100 Teams. Other sponsors include Novo Nordisk, Walgreens/Duane Reade, and MSTANY.

The BoardWALK Festival and Tour de Cure event will encompass features of an enhanced event that aligns with the American Diabetes Association’s new strategic plan. While the event will continue to showcase the signature Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes, new components will include a Tour de Cure and Bootcamp Obstacle Course Challenge. The Bootcamp Obstacle Course will have rotating classes throughout the day; two designed for adults and one special kids/youth Bootcamp session. There will be a 5k Boardwalk Run and multiple cycling courses available to participants. In addition, the day will also include a ‘Living Active” area, Live Cooking/Healthy Eating demonstrations and sampling, a Health and Wellness Festival Pavilion, and on-site health screenings. The day will be suited for all ages, and encompass a complete overall Health and Well-Being Festival feel.

James M. Maisel, MD, RGONY Chairman, retinal specialist, and recipient of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award 2017, states, “Diabetic retinopathy can be asymptomatic, so it is important for community members with diabetes to get a yearly dilated eye exam. Sharp vision can be maintained with medications and laser has prevented almost all diabetic related blindness since the 1970s. More advanced disease can often regain vision with brief outpatient surgery.”

Event enhancements will include a Military Style Boot Camp Challenge, 5k Boardwalk Run/Walk, Cycling Routes, Live Cooking Demonstrations, ‘Get Fit, Don’t Sit’ Area, Health Pavilion EXPO, on-site Health Screenings, Team Tents, Red Strider/Runner Clubhouse, Champions/VIP Tent, and Live Music.
