On April 12, Muscular Development magazine responds to an article published by the Dairy Reporter with regard to a new whey-protein based nutritional beverage developed in the UK.
According to the article published by the Dairy Reporter, Volac, a dairy manufacturer based in Great Britain, launched a new low-fat drink with a high protein content called “Upbeat.” The article says the drink is made from liquidated whey protein concentrate and authentic fruit juices. In the article, Volac says each bottle contains 20 grams of protein and less than 150 calories. The drink also contains 50 percent less sugar and only 2 grams of fat.
The article says Upbeat is available in two flavors: strawberry or mango passion fruit. Brian Turner, a spokesperson for Muscular Development magazine, says protein beverages have grown in popularity. “These beverages that are low in sugar, low in fat, and high in protein are good for athletes who want to build muscle,” he says. “Protein helps during the recovery process and can amplify muscle-building results after a workout. The protein gives cells the ability to regenerate and increase mass. It’s a good idea to have these drinks after a workout to maximize results.”
Turner adds that lacto-vegetarian athletes could also benefit from consuming drinks made from whey protein. “Protein is essential for the muscle-building process, but some vegetarians might not be consuming as much protein as desired without meat,” he says. “Whey protein is a safe way for vegetarians to get those essential amino acids needed to stack muscle because it’s a dairy byproduct.”
