Mount Sinai - National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute Opens in New York City
Date:6/8/2015

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 08, 2015

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and National Jewish Health, the nation’s leading respiratory hospital based in Denver, today announced the official opening of the Mount Sinai - National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute at Mount Sinai’s campus in Manhattan. The partnership creates a strong, integrated program for diagnosis and treatment of respiratory illness and lung disease, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and interstitial lung disease (ILD).

National Jewish Health is the only institution in the nation dedicated to research and treatment of respiratory disease for both adults and children. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is ranked among the top medical schools in the United States and is the medical education and research hub for the Mount Sinai Health System, one of the country’s largest not-for-profit, multi-site health care systems in the country. The Mount Sinai Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine houses world-class programs in sarcoidosis, lung cancer, critical care medicine, genomics and immunological sciences.

“With one in four Americans suffering from a serious, chronic or life-threatening respiratory disease, the need for excellent patient care and cutting edge research has never been greater,” said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Health System. “The Mount Sinai – National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute will be a destination for patients suffering from asthma, COPD and other lung illnesses seeking world-class care.”

“For decades patients have traveled to Denver from around the country, seeking the expertise and unique approach to respiratory care that we provide,” said Michael Salem, MD, President and CEO of National Jewish Health. “Teaming up with the visionary teams at Mount Sinai and the Icahn School of Medicine extends our ability to share our expertise and innovations with more patients in the New York region and beyond.”

The Respiratory Institute uses the multidisciplinary approach employed by National Jewish Health in its outpatient programs. Pulmonologists collaborate with specialists in related disciplines, including cardiology, allergy, gastroenterology, rheumatology, ENT, and thoracic surgery, to provide team-based, patient-centered care. The Respiratory Institute also draws on Mount Sinai’s programs in personalized medicine, genomics, and data-driven clinical protocols to enhance the quality and outcomes of the respiratory disease practice.

“We look forward to working with National Jewish Health to advance respiratory care in both New York City and throughout the country, from disease management to education and research,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of the Icahn School of Medicine, and President for Academic Affairs for the Mount Sinai Health System.

“As leaders during this time of rapidly evolving health care in America, our two institutions have forged a partnership that delivers extraordinary care for respiratory patients in the New York region and beyond,” said Charles Powell, MD, the Janice and Coleman Rabin Professor of Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Chief Executive Officer of the Respiratory Institute.

The Respiratory Institute is led Dr. Powell as CEO and Louis DePalo, MD, Clinical Director. Dr. Powell is the Janice and Coleman Rabin Professor and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine. Dr. DePalo is the Lane Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Physicians at the Respiratory Institute first began seeing patients in January and are now accepting outside referrals and new patients. Respiratory Institute patients are currently being seen at two locations on East 98th and 102nd streets in Manhattan. A single permanent location will open in the fall. Patients and physicians wishing to make an appointment at the Respiratory Institute can call 212.241.5656 or visit http://nationaljewish.mountsinai.org/.
