PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- 1.1 billion people worldwide go without clean water supplies; another 1.5 billion don't have adequate sanitation facilities.

WaterAid, an organization giving the world's poorest people access to safe water and sanitation, heads one of the largest water projects worldwide. Ghana, Africa, is an area WaterAid recognizes as a country of particular need:

-- Ghana's northern regions are acutely deprived, with one in ten children

dying before their fifth birthday.

-- Inadequate water supply and sanitation services contribute to over 70%

of diseases experienced.

-- 44% of the rural population has access to safe water -- 11% have access

to sanitation facilities.

Projects financed in Ghana include building community pump wells and ventilated latrines, and facilitating good hygiene education.
