Keller Family Dental Explains their Infection Control Protocols
Date:5/3/2013

Keller, TX (PRWEB) May 03, 2013

Keller Family Dental explains their own infection control protocols; in the wake of the recent news according to CNN, of an Oklahoma dentist not practicing regulated infection controls.

As a standard they use CaviWipes for all surfaces and countertops. CaviWipes are effective against Staphylococcus Aureus with reduced susceptibility to Vancomycin and Influenza A2 Virus. The office has a mandate to wear gloves, masks and safety goggles to protect themselves and also patients. They dispose of needles and other sharp objects in puncture-resistant containers.

At Keller Family Dental they have a sterilization room which is divided into three sections: receiving, cleaning, and decontamination; sterilization; preparation, packaging and storage.

The first step is to remove tissue, blood and other contaminants from reusable instruments found in dentals offices, Keller uses an Ultra Sonic. Ultra Sonic energy creates billions of minute bubbles in an ultrasonic cleaning bath that implode with tremendous force when they contact dental instruments.
The process, called cavitation, reaches into tiny cracks and crevices, literally blasting contaminants away from the surface in a much more efficient manner than manual scrubbing, which has the additional disadvantage of requiring personnel to handle dirty instruments.

The second step is an autoclave. It is a machine that sterilizes all the instruments. Sterilization means the complete destruction of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and endospores. This is accomplished by the material being exposed to a temperature of 121 degrees Celsius, or 250 degrees Fahrenheit, for at least 15 minutes. Optimal temperature is reached through the use of pressurized steam. Keller Family Dental’s autoclave can reach temperatures of 273 degrees and can process for 45 minutes. Autoclave bags are imprinted with a dye that changes color when the correct temperature has been reached.

Once the sterilization process is complete, they keep all instruments in sterilized bags in a specifically designated area. Bags are not opened until preparation for every individual patient. These are just a few of their infection control procedures in place and regulated by OSHA, Centers for Disease Control, and the American Dental Association.
