June is National Headache and Migraine Awareness Month
Date:6/24/2015

According to the National Institutes of Health, about 80,000,000 Americans are struggling with some kind of headaches symptoms. These pain symptoms include chronic migraines or headaches, and often are accompanied by tinnitus or ear pain, vertigo or dizziness, neck pain, and TMJ/D (disorders of the temporomandibular joint of the jaw).

Common attempts to treat head pain

Many patients have been treating their migraine and headache symptoms with the use (and overuse) of over the counter pain medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin or acetaminophen. Others have been prescribed more powerful pain medications or migraine-specific drugs like beta-blockers, and many have searched for alternative headache remedies like magnesium supplements or acupuncture to get relief from their pain. However, while some approaches may temporarily ease the pain, these options for migraine treatment do not resolve a frequent hidden cause of ongoing headaches — untreated damage to the jaw's delicate TMJ (temporomandibular joint).

The jaw, TMJ, and headaches
Many doctors and neurologists are now learning that an imbalance in the way the teeth bite together (often from head, neck, face or jaw trauma) is frequently the cause of these long term headaches. Over time this bite imbalance creates stresses on the muscles, nerves, tendons, and ligaments of the face and jaw, and results in painful migraine-like headaches. It is often seen in patients who have experienced some type of minor or major head trauma, years or even decades ago. Something as simple as whiplash from a minor auto accident, a fall, or jostling during a routine sports game could actually be the underlying cause of head pain. These TMJ headaches can be difficult to pinpoint and are often left untreated. Luckily, TMJ disorder specialists in the dental profession can use a painless diagnostic system to quickly reviuew a patient's symptoms and determine if their headaches or migraines are caused by dental imbalances.

The TruDenta treatment system
The TruDenta® system of care has been used by dental professionals for over half a decade to successfully diagnose and treat patients' headache symptoms. TruDenta uses a combination of proven sports medicine technologies and advanced dentistry to progressively rehabilitate damaged musculature of the head, neck, face, and jaw. The system uses no drugs, needles, or surgery to restore the natural range of movement to the mouth and jaw, and patients often see immediate results even after the first treatment.

"My wife suffered from chronic headaches for over ten years. We visited every specialist with no answers. After her first TruDenta treatment, she has not had another headache.”
— Dr. Jeff Mastrioianni, an orthodontist in Glen Carbon, IL who now uses TruDenta for many of his patients.

Is TruDenta the right headache treatment option?

Patients eligible for TruDenta care will typically exhibit one or more of the following signs that their headaches or migraine symptoms are actually TMJ-related headaches:

  • Difficulty opening their mouth all the way
  • Restricted cervical range of motion (the ability to tilt, turn and tip their head)
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw and/or clenching and grinding their teeth at night

More than 400 dentists and orthodontists in 47 states offer the TruDenta system. The care can be covered by insurance and most doctors offer a free consultation to determine if it is the right answer for their patients.
