Concerns about Plastic Surgery on Social Media Underline the Importance of Being Extra Careful When Selecting a Surgeon, says Dr. J Plastic Surgery
Date:9/18/2017

A September 1 article on Chicago Tonight discusses a recent study which found that 26 percent of the leading 163 posts for the most popular Instagram hashtags relating to plastic surgery came from physicians who are actually not board certified plastic surgeons. Beverly Hills based plastic surgeon Payam Jarrah-Nejad, M.D., F.I.C.S., F.A.C.S., known more casually to his patients as Dr. J, says that, while it’s a perfectly good idea to use social media as a way to explore the many options available to today’s patients, individuals need to exercise significant caution when it comes time to actually select a plastic surgeon for a given procedure.

Dr. J, who himself maintains a presence on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and elsewhere, notes that these sites show many images of work that doctors say they have performed, but they do not vet the credentials of the medical professionals who use them. That’s why it’s extremely important to take a close look at doctors’ backgrounds to make sure they are qualified and reputable. Most importantly, Dr. J notes that patients should insist on only considering board certified plastic surgeons. The doctor, who is actually double board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, notes that board certification means that surgeons have met the rigorous standards created by leading physicians in their field to ensure that he or she can be trusted to perform operations safely and effectively.

The Chicago Tonight article points out that the consequences of an inexperienced or uninformed doctor making a seemingly minor mistake during a procedure can be life threatening and may lead to results that are disappointing or worse. Dr. J says that, while plastic surgery has become extremely safe and highly effective, the choice of the right surgeon is essential. He notes that there is an important aesthetic dimension to plastic surgery, and for procedures ranging from a rhinoplasty (nose job) to a thigh lift, it’s important to have a doctor who has demonstrated his or her ability to sculpt results that look both pleasing and natural.

Dr. J adds that the stories about botched procedures performed by cut-rate practitioners are legion and that patients should consider the often extremely large costs associated with revision procedures to repair failed operations. Leaving aside the stress and pain associated with a bad plastic surgery, Dr. J. points that it’s vastly less expensive to select an outstanding plastic surgeon in the first place, so that no revisions will be needed.
