64 Schools Cross the Finish Line with a 2019 Athletics Grant from California Casualty
Date:4/17/2019

Student-athletes at 64 public middle and high schools in 32 states will gain a competitive edge thanks to a 2019 Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant from California Casualty. A total of $67,149 is being given this year to help purchase new equipment, improve player safety, and provide uniforms.

The grant is named for California Casualty Chairman Emeritus Tom Brown, an avid sportsman who has observed that lessons learned on athletic fields – teamwork, confidence and sportsmanship – translate to the classroom and beyond.

Examples of how schools will use the 2019 Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grants include:

  • Fairvalley Continuation High School (CA) to provide needed uniforms and equipment needed to keep the football, basketball, softball and soccer teams in the Continuation High School League
  • Mead High School (CO) to purchase equipment for the unified sports programs that allow students with disabilities to participate with general-education students in football, basketball and soccer
  • Bassick High School (CT) for a new net system to benefit the girls volleyball team
  • Marshalltown High School (IA) to invest in a tent to protect track and field athletes from inclement weather during meets
  • DuQuoin High School (IL) to buy much needed uniforms for the boys basketball team
  • Newcomerstown Middle School (OH) to acquire safer helmets for the football team

The awards range from $1,000 to $3,000.

Since its inception in 2011, more than $738,000 has been awarded to over 660 schools across the nation.

“The Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grants benefit students and communities, and California Casualty is proud to support that effort,” said Lisa Almeida, Assistant Vice President.

California Casualty has served educators since 1951 and has provided the NEA® Auto and Home Insurance Program since 2000.
