“Stop Talking about Omega-3” Writes an Omega-3 Specialist and Fish Oil Manufacturer

After The New York Times published an article last week questioning whether fish oil supplements made a difference for heart health, Bo Martinsen, MD, co-founder of the “fresh fish oil company” Omega3 Innovations, decided to respond. He published a piece of his own called “Stop Talking about Omega-3.”

“We need to stop talking about omega-3 fish oil in a generalized way,” said Dr. Martinsen of the article. “Every week, we see new stories portraying omega-3 either as a cure-all or as snake oil. Unfortunately, the information is presented in such a simplistic way, it ends up misinforming and confusing everyone, from omega-3 consumers to health practitioners.”

In “Stop Talking about Omega-3,” Dr. Martinsen writes that there are several pieces of information that need to be included in discussions of new omega-3 research: the type and chemical makeup of the oil used in the study, the dose, freshness levels, and length of treatment.

Because these points can mean the difference between good outcomes or not, says Dr. Martinsen, it is misleading to leave them out of discussions about the benefits of fish and cod liver oil.

Looking at coming studies about omega-3 fish oil, Dr. Martinsen said it is especially important to start addressing these points now.

“A number of articles I’ve read, including The New York Times piece, write that Harvard University’s VITAL study, slated to be completed next year, will settle the question about whether fish oil supplements are good for heart health or not,” said Dr. Martinsen. “What people don’t understand is that the VITAL study is using a chemically modified, low-dose omega-3 supplement. How such a study can make conclusions about the benefits of a natural, full-spectrum fish oil is beyond comprehension.”
