Tips for Effective Natural Alternatives to Pain Medications

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning about common prescription painkillers titled: “Prescription Painkiller Overdoses at Epidemic Levels.” It reported that during the last 10 years, deaths from prescription painkiller overdoses more than tripled. Over 40 people die daily because of overdosing on hydrocodone (Vicodin), methadone, oxycodone (OxyContin), oxymorphone (Opana), and other narcotics. According to CDC Director Thomas Frieden, “Overdoses involving prescription painkillers are at epidemic levels and now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined.” Enough painkillers were prescribed in 2010 to medicate every American adult around the clock for a month.

Commenting on this report, the Los Angeles Times further noted that there are more drug deaths than traffic fatalities in the United States each year. While most causes of preventable death have been declining, deaths from painkillers have more than doubled in the past 10 years.

Quoting Dr. J G Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP, “When they’re in pain, patients demand fast help. Unfortunately, they often aren’t aware of the damaging side-effects of their pain relief medications.” Many natural, well-researched alternatives are now available. Though these alternatives may not work as quickly, they offer fewer adverse reactions.

Dr. Moellendorf points out that the most researched alternative for pain control has been omega-3 fatty acids derived from cold water fish such as salmon. University of Pittsburgh Medical School professor of neurosurgery, Dr. Joseph Maroon, MD, specializes in the treatment of chronic degenerative spine disease. He is also the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. Dr. Maroon reports remarkable success in treating chronic pain patients and injured football players with high does of omega-3 fatty acids.

At the 73rd meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Dr. Maroon reported on the results of 253 non-surgical candidates with chronic neck or back pain who were given high doses of omega-3 fatty acids daily. After an average of 75 days, 59% stopped taking prescription drugs for their pain, and 88% were pleased enough with their results to continue taking the omega-3 supplement. No significant adverse effects were reported in the study. Dr. Moellendorf notes that this study along with many parallel research studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids are equal to ibuprofen for reducing arthritic pain.

David Rakel, MD of the University of Wisconsin—Madison’s Integrative Medicine Program states, “Fish oil is the clean-up hitter of supplements.” For pain control, Dr. Rakel also recommends adding turmeric or ginger for more effectiveness. Patients should consult with their doctors as high doses of omega-3’s can thin the blood.

Dr. Moellendorf notes that vitamin D has been receiving quite a bit of attention during the last two years for its results in controlling chronic pain. Dr. Tanya Edwards, MD, medical director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Integrative Medicine recommends vitamin D for many of her chronic pain patients who show low levels of vitamin D on blood testing. As she states, “Personally, I've seen miracles. I've found that it can have a huge benefit in the symptoms of people with fibromyalgia.” She also reports excellent results using vitamin D with many other types of chronic pain. One study found that those deficient in vitamin D required almost twice the dose of opioid painkillers to get the same results.

It has been observed by Dr. Moellendorf that many anti-inflammatory plants and herbs work similar to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) by impeding the enzymes that trigger pain and swelling. Turmeric, ginger, white willow bark, and bromelain are some of the most effective and well-researched. Beneficial effects have also been reported when using rosemary, cat’s claw, and green tea. Dr. Moellendorf warns that because these plants work the same way as NSAIDs in the body, there may be some of the same side-effects such as an upset stomach and bleeding, though to a milder degree.
