Is Stress Causing Breakouts? Probiotic Action Sheds Light on an Article by the Huffington Post on if Acne and Stress are Still Related

Everyday stress has been known to have effects on the body and mind in many ways. Whether hair loss as the Huffington Post suggests, or disrupted sleep and eating patterns, but what connect does stress have to acne, if any?

Fernando Perez, a representative from Probiotic Action helps give some insight on the truth behind stress and acne, and offers some advice on ways to lessen both burdens.

“Blaming stress for acne rather than searching for what you may be doing to cause the acne is what those with breakouts should be paying attention to,” says Perez.

When we are under stress we tend to neglect proper eating habits claims the article; or perhaps the fact that we take in less fluids, suggests Perez. Increased stress levels often force the body to release chemicals and oils to help balance the body. A combination of increased sweat, overproduction of hormones, and a poor diet could be a perfect breeding ground for a breakout.

Dr. Anne Chapas of Union Square Laser Dermatology states in a past Huffington Post article related to acne, "I think that there is psychological stress and there is physical stress, and I see changes in people's skin as a result of [the two]." Chapas also adds that both types of stress are known to increase levels of cortisol, which along with heightened hormone levels cause the skin to produce excess oils.
