DuPont Leader: Agricultural Improvements Key to Meeting Growing Food, Water Needs in Africa
Date:5/6/2010

Strong Public-Private Collaborations Key to Success

Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania (Vocus) May 6, 2010 -- Agricultural improvements will play a key role in tackling Africa’s crucial problems of hunger and water scarcity, said James C. Collins, president - DuPont Crop Protection, during the World Economic Forum on Africa.

“Local infrastructure that provides secure access to land, water, energy, agricultural inputs and financing is fundamental to sustainable production,” Collins said speaking on the Managing the Water, Food, Energy Nexus panel.

Collins said agricultural improvements hinge on strong collaboration between public and private organizations to increase access to knowledge and technology. Additional investment in research and infrastructure is also critical.

“DuPont invests more than $700 million annually in research and development to create answers to increase food production,” he added. “The company also is involved in a number of initiatives to deliver safer, more nutritious food, and produce more renewable energy, while reducing our environmental footprint.”

The 2010 World Economic Forum on Africa brought together world leaders and innovative thinkers to discuss tangible ways to enable positive change in Africa and the world. Managing the Water, Food, Energy Nexus panelists discussed how African governments and businesses can work across boundaries to ensure that the current water-food-energy bottleneck is turned into sustainable growth and development.
